AI Take Over: How Much Can You Really Trust Artificial Intelligence? Are you relying on Artificial Intelligence to lighten your workload?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is taking the world by storm. You can ask AI to do anything, between finding a new recipe, writing articles, or giving advice. The options are limitless, but AI is far from perfect.

According to a recent article, Steven Schwartz, a New York attorney, is currently in hot water after utilizing ChatGPT for his case research. He created a legal brief based on sample cases curated by ChatGPT, but these cases were non-existent. This oversight led to the attorney presenting a case based on completely fictitious findings.

ChatGPT is a great resource for foundational research and information. However, without verifying this information, there is a higher risk of inaccuracy.

Follow these three steps before publishing something from ChatGPT or other AI tools:

  1. Ensure your prompt is concise - The request given to the AI is the first step to an accurate response. Lengthy or unclear language may cause an inaccurate or confusing response. Keep your request short and clear to ensure the Artificial Intelligence recognizes the prompt and responds correctly.
  2. Proofread for errors - Again, Artificial Intelligence is new and far from perfect. Never assume that it can’t make mistakes.
  3. Fact-check any information referenced - Don’t end up like Steven. AI might reference past cases, statistics, or laws, but never take these at face value. Always do your own research into these facts to ensure they are accurate.

AI is becoming an increasingly popular tool for law firms and other businesses to save time on research and writing. You can utilize these tools to lay the foundation of your research, but it’s still not foolproof. Always review, edit, and fact-check what AI produces before using it in a professional capacity.
