You may think your clients choose you, but much more often you get to be the one to do the choosing. Though the vast majority of clients you should be honored to work with, there is the occasional client you may want to avoid. Here are a couple of things that a client like that might say.

No Questions to Ask

This is a horribly scary thing to hear from someone who is about to invest money into your business. They should have questions - it's natural to have them, and want to have them answered with upfront, honest answers. If they don't have any questions, it's likely a red flag for later on, and they will cause you issues down the line. Or, sometimes, they're just timid about speaking up. If you think you might have one of these people on your hands, make sure you encourage them to speak or email you later. Encourage them to talk to you over a cup of coffee about any concerns they may have.

They Know Someone Who Does What You Do

It really doesn't matter if they do know someone that does what you do, they're still talking to you. And for some reason, they hired you instead of their brother or cousin or best friend, so it's unlikely that they know someone that helps you the way you do. On the other hand, they might just be trying to relate to you and your business, in which case you should embrace such a conversation, and see if you have anything in common with them, either. Ask why they didn't hire their relative, and tell them about what your wife does, too. Relating isn't bad by any means, but they don't need to do it through fibs.
